LiFang was completely shocked. Holding his breath, he rushedinside, madehis way through the tables and stopped at the one where Hu Jinappeared to be – but there wasn’t.Thequiet air formed a mirror of ice, reflecting a lonely and broken heart.Li Fang did his best, but still couldn’tdefeat the bleak test of love and the ironic uncertainty of life, whichfinally tore him up into pieces.

The rhythm of a song rose somewhere in Li Fang’s heart. As colorfullights shone the sky into a Milky Way, he recognized that it was the theme songof the movie he had just watched – that about Niulang and Zhinv, about lostlove. “It’s Valetine’s Day.” Li said to himself, wiping away a clear drop of tear in his eye. He went out ofthe tea shop, not knowing where to go, just as he could never know which way hecould take to approach a gild friend’s heart. But Li wouldn’t give up. He keptgoing. He walked into the dark. (175 words 王炳元)

Barely concealing his sadness but managing a smile, Li Hua walked towards his girlfriend. “Let’shave dinner first. I’m starving to death.” Said Hu Jin, apparently unaware of his strange behavior. Li Hua nodded.Ontheir way to a near-by restaurant, responding to Li Hua’s doubt about the dateplace, she causally said it was due to her carelessness. Even without anapology, wild with anger and depression, Li shouted, “Today is Valentine’s Day!How could a gift weigh more thangenuine concern? I sincerely hope you could have a knowledge of thesignificance of sincerity.” Eventually, Li trudgedaway, leaving Hu Jin at a loss on the street. They broke up in silence.

Time still went by and after years, they both gained marriage andcarried the burden of family and life. One day Li encountered Hu at the same place. After a while, with a sudden recognition falling uponon them both, they exchangedrelieved glances while vivid recollectionsand their lost love floated into the two minds. (169 words 李辰洋)

Though hesitating for a second, Li walked towards her, feeling her legs were weighing him down.To his astonishment, Hu Jin was holding abunch of flowers and some chocolates, unmistakably the one he had just thrown away. His heart sank. “Is she breakingup with me?” Hu was awaitingin front of the shop, with asophisticated smile on her face. Determined not to be like the herd boycrying about his lost love, he workedup the courage to just be honest with his face burning. “Dear, I haveto apologize for throwing away your gifts, but it’s just because you mean somuch to me. You see, I thought …”

“Why would you bring me gifts? It’s your birthday!” Hu laughed,handing over the flowers. In relief, Li burst into laughter, too. He had made a huge fool of himself. Itwasn’t until a week later that it was the real Valentine’s Day, and they justhappened to get the same gifts for each other! What were the odds! Staring at the dreamy girlhe loved so much that he scarcelyremembered his own birthday, Li Fang felt he is the luckiest in the world. (198words 陈虹汐)

He stopped immediately, withtemporary relief and thrill, which were soon replaced by deepdesperation. Standing still hopelessly, he gazedat Hu Jin over there, not knowing how to explain the misunderstanding.He would be pleased now if he didn’t throw the gifts away, but precisely he could never getthem back. Unconscious of herapproach, he was frightened by a warmand tight embrace, Hu attached her cheek to his chest, saying wearily, “You must have beenwaiting for a long time somewhere, judging from your fatigue. Whatever happened, it doesn’t matter. Everything isfine with your presence.”

In the wind, if someone passed by, he would see two figuresstanding there, hugging each other tightly under a quiet and warm atmosphere,with deep relief and delight on their faces, as if time had stopped its step. (138 words 马行健)

Hu Jin’s words left Li Fang shocked and at a loss for a while. Hesaid to himself, frozen and regretful, “Gifts, gifts… I have thrown them away.”With a sudden flash of realization,he immediately grasped her handtightly and tried to explain. But itwas obvious that Hu Jinwaswild with anger and all the efforts he made to make her calm downseemed fruitless.

However, Li Fang kept apologizing to her over and over again, andeventually Hu Jin settled down. Then Li Fang told her everything, the wrongshop, the sadness, the gift and the story about lost love, with his eyesstaring at her sincerely. Hu Jin was initially in silence but ultimately smiledslowly with tears welling up in eyes. Their relationship got closer than everbefore, as what the announcer said, “It’s a fine day today, Valentine’s Day.”(146 words 潘杨)

There was no doubt Li Fang was then at a loss for any responses,but put on a smile against his will.Apparently Hu discovered the abnormal behavior of her boyfriend, “Is everythingOK?” Aware of the necessity for anexplanation, Li replied with several discontinuities, “I … I was toonervous…. I mistook our dating place…. I thought you would never turn up —” Even before he could finish, Hu interrupted, “Obviously you nevertook it seriously. And maybe I had you fooled? That’s ridiculous!”

Hu Jun ran back home, leaving Li alone in the dark, who was in a terrible predicament. Suddenly,there came a scream, Hu was so furiousthat she tripped over a rock. Withoutthinking twice, Li held her in the arm and rushed her to hospital.Though the Valentine’s Day date could countas a tragedy, the couple realized the care and company of each other isthe best gift ever. Staring at Hu Jininshocked silence, Li was completely at a loss on hearing her voice. Therewas an embarrassing atmosphere without any words which didn’t last for seconds.“You did forget our date, didn’t you?” Her voice was shaking with wild anger and astonishment as she lookeddirectly at his empty hands. Overwhelmedby extreme disappointment, she ignored his immediate apology. Li Fangcaught her in the arm to stop her from turning around.

The shining stars of the Milky Way were obviously bright, whichreminded him of that sad story about lost love. It ought to be a romanticValentine’s Day, but … All kinds of feelings flooded into his heart and he gave her a guilty look. Hu was weeping and the sadness on her facesuggested she was still filled withdisbelief. “I waited for you in the coffee shop for hours and I hadjust forgotten the date place.” He was nearly begging and trying to comfort herdesperately. “Can you forgive me? Please, just one word.” To his relief, sheultimately replied with an agreement to meet the next day. She walked awaywithout looking back, leaving him standing alone. (197 words 傅冬蕾)

Conscious of the misunderstanding of lost love and the eyes full of anger andfrustration, Li Fang was at a loss, when Hu Jindissolvedinto a hearty laugh and explained in a soft voice,“I know there’s something wrong and I definitely trust you.” Then shemarvelously took out an amazing picture of their sweet times in the shape of a heart as agift for her Mr. Right on this extraordinary Valentine’s Day while the personwho should have enjoyed the harmonious moment was now in desperate regret. Considering his mistrust of the girlwho replaced conflict withlove and compromise and anticipatedhis affection, Li turned around without hesitation and momentarily vanished in the darkhorizon, leaving Hu’s tears rolling down her face.

Just a few minutes later, Hu, indespair and sadness, caught sight of Li Fang, who was miraculouslyholding some dazzling roses, “I’m sorry and I’m the most stupid and ignorantman in the world. But if possible, could you permit this fool to kiss you onemore time?” Hu burst out laughing tear-stained and rushed to her soulmate withopen arms. (188 words 黄乐欣)

Overwhelmed by a feeling ofshock, LiFang actually had to face a dilemma.He hesitated to respond to Hu Jin, and then he ran to the tea shop with clenched teeth, as if hehad been ready for the complaint. “Where were you? Every minute I waited could beahit on my heart,” he could hardly breathe when her low voice appeared,“however, a marvelous power supports me to believe you, just like the permanentwaiting Zhinv gave to the herd boy, so my love will never change.”

Raising his head suddenly, moved and surprised, Li Fang caught abright smile on her face, with a photo album that recorded each moment theyspent together. He couldn’t help buthold her in the arms. “But the gift I prepared have just been thrownaway.” He whispered, choked with sobs.“Your appearance is my best present of Valentine’s Day.” Said Hu Jin softly. Bathed in the spectacular sunset,the couple hugged each other tightly. It seemed that the misunderstandingeventually didn’t develop as the expansive Milky Way, and that their love willlast forever.
